Eén keer per maand beantwoorden we jullie belangrijkste vragen. Deze keer vertelt hoofdredacteur Lindsay Mossink over onze nieuwste politieke podcast, eenvoudige levensvragen en het controleren van nieuws uit gebieden zonder vrije pers.
Deze week zag ik de derde aflevering van de podcast Frans (Timmermans) voorbij komen. In hoeverre kun je een neutrale titel zijn als je een podcast publiceert met slechts één politicus?
“Met voldoende transparantie, context en tegenwicht is er, als je het mij vraagt, geen probleem, maar juist een grote waarde. Het zijn, zoals maker en politiek verslaggever Edo van der Goot zelf scherp omschrijft, politiek uitzonderlijke tijden. Een rechts (inmiddels demissionair) kabinet roept vragen op over de oppositie.”
“Is Timmermans de man om links uit het slop te trekken? Hoe voert hij oppositie? En kan hij van GroenLinks en de PvdA wel één partij maken? Daar zijn we kritisch op, en dat klinkt nadrukkelijk door in de afleveringen die we met Timmermans maakten. Zo’n aanpak geeft juist een completer beeld van waar ze nu staan in Den Haag. Oordeel zeker ook zelf, de afleveringen zijn hieronder te beluisteren.”

Ik zie op NU.nl regelmatig artikelen met eenvoudige levensvragen: hoe doe ik de was, hoe ga ik om met een fitbit of hoe kan ik beter slapen? Voorzien die artikelen wel in een behoefte? Je kunt dat namelijk ook googelen.
“Het feit dat er ook veel op wordt gezocht, bevestigt dat er een behoefte is. NU.nl is een betrouwbaar platform dat een belangrijke rol kan vervullen in een internetwereld die vol staat met onbetrouwbare of tegenstrijdige informatie.”
“Toch hebben we ook veel gesprekken op de redactie over deze ‘eenvoudige levensvragen’. Past het wel bij NU.nl? Sluit het voldoende aan bij de nieuwsontwikkelingen? We willen jou verder helpen met het nieuws dat speelt, daar zijn we soms wel wat ver van verwijderd geraakt. Dat hebben we recent dan ook weer wat meer aangescherpt.”
“Dat neemt niet weg dat ik denk dat we juist bij alledaagse onderwerpen (mits dus relevant) kunnen zorgen voor betrouwbare informatie, zonder ruis.”
Hoe controleer je het nieuws uit gebieden waar geen vrije pers is?
“Dat is ontzettend lastig, maar daar zijn gelukkig wel veel manieren voor. In alle gevallen begint het met het goed controleren van de bron. Vaak zie je dat media in zo’n land verbonden zijn aan het regime. Propaganda ligt dan al snel op de loer.”
“Daarom wil je altijd onafhankelijke bevestiging, via internationale media, mensenrechtenorganisaties of onderzoeksgroepen zoals Bellingcat. Als het om beelden gaat, kun je die ook zelf proberen te verifiëren. Een kritische blik staat in ieder geval voorop. Zeker als het gaat om het moment, de bron en de mogelijke bedoelingen.”

This week, I saw the third episode of the podcast Frans (Timmermans) go by. To what extent can you be a neutral title if you publish a podcast with only one politician?
“With sufficient transparency, context, and counterweight, there is, if you ask me, no problem, but rather great value. These are, as maker and political reporter Edo van der Goot himself sharply describes, politically exceptional times. A right-wing (now outgoing) cabinet raises questions about the opposition.”
“Is Timmermans the man to pull the left out of the doldrums? How does he lead the opposition? And can he turn GroenLinks and the PvdA into one party? We are critical of that, and that is emphatically reflected in the episodes we made with Timmermans. Such an approach gives a more complete picture of where they stand in The Hague. Be sure to judge for yourself, the episodes can be listened to below.”

I regularly see articles on NU.nl with simple life questions: how do I do the laundry, how do I deal with a fitbit, or how can I sleep better? Do those articles meet a need? You can also google that.
“The fact that it is also searched for a lot confirms that there is a need. NU.nl is a reliable platform that can play an important role in an internet world full of unreliable or contradictory information.”
“However, we also have many discussions in the editorial office about these ‘simple life questions.’ Does it fit with NU.nl? Does it sufficiently connect with the news developments? We want to help you further with the news that is playing, we have sometimes strayed a bit far from that. We have recently tightened that up a bit more.”
“That does not alter the fact that I think that we can provide reliable information, without noise, especially for everyday topics (if relevant).”
How do you fact-check news from areas where there is no free press?
“That is incredibly difficult, but fortunately there are many ways to do it. In all cases, it starts with carefully checking the source. You often see that media in such a country are connected to the regime. Propaganda is then quickly lurking.”
“That is why you always want independent confirmation, via international media, human rights organizations, or research groups such as Bellingcat. When it comes to images, you can also try to verify them yourself. In any case, a critical view is paramount. Especially when it comes to the moment, the source, and the possible intentions.”
