Carlos Alcaraz may try to win the Wimbledon tennis tournament for the third time in a row. The 22-year-old Spaniard was too strong for Taylor Fritz in the exciting semi-final on Friday afternoon: 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6 (6).
Fritz started the semi-final battle with a service game, but Alcaraz set the tone. The winner of the last two Wimbledon editions immediately took a break lead. It was immediately the last break of the first set, because both players were no longer surprised on their own service. Alcaraz had already made the decisive gap and won with 6-4.
Also in the second set, the numbers two and five in the world were present on their own service. They barely even allowed breakpoints and seemed to be working towards a tiebreak. But Alcaraz still handed in his service with a 6-5 deficit, bringing Fritz back into the game.
Alcaraz shifted up a gear in the third set and won in just over half an hour. He again managed to keep all his service games. At a score of 1-1 he took Fritz’s game, at a lead of 5-3 Alcaraz conquered another break.
Alcaraz Makes Difference in Exciting Tiebreak
Fritz has delivered his best performance this year at Wimbledon, where he has reached the last four for the first time. The American occasionally impressed on his own service, including with a series of no less than four aces. But Alcaraz was also very solid on his own serve in the fourth set.
At a score of 6-6 in the fourth set, there had to be a tiebreak. After a considered lob, Alcaraz took his first mini-break and extended to a 4-1 lead. Fritz did not give up and even took a 5-4 lead, after suddenly taking two mini-breaks in a row.
But Fritz failed to serve out the match and Alcaraz came back to 6-6. He then had enough with his first match point.
Repetition of Roland Garros or last two Wimbledon finals
Novak Djokovic may be Alcaraz’s opponent in the final for the third time in a row. The seven-time winner from Serbia will face Jannik Sinner on Friday evening, who has never reached the final at Wimbledon before.
Sinner met Alcaraz earlier this year in the final of Roland Garros. This final turned out to be a historic, 5.5-hour battle. Alcaraz survived three match points, forced a fifth set and won the decisive tiebreak in Paris.
