In a shooting in Manhattan, New York, on Monday evening (local time), four people were shot dead. One of the fatalities is a 36-year-old police officer. The others were two women and a man.
This was announced by the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, at a press conference. A fifth person was shot and seriously injured.
The shooting took place in a skyscraper on Park Avenue in the heart of the city. The shooter got out of a double-parked BMW and walked with an M4 rifle towards the entrance of the building, said police chief Jessica Tisch. Such a rifle is, according to The New York Times, comparable to the semi-automatic firearm AR-15.
Upon entering, he immediately shot the police officer and fired a hail of bullets at a woman who was seeking cover behind a pillar. The suspect let a woman out of the elevator unharmed and then went to the 34th floor, where he shot another woman dead.
The office of the company Rudin Management is located there, Tisch said. The building also houses investment company Blackstone and the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL).
The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, is from Las Vegas. He presumably acted alone. In recent days, he drove from his home state of Nevada via Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa, the District of Columbia, and New Jersey to New York. He had only arrived there on Monday afternoon.
A revolver and more ammunition were found in the suspect’s car. According to Tisch, the man had a weapons permit in his home state.
Nothing is known about the shooter’s motive. He died from a gunshot wound, the police chief says. He probably took his own life.
According to CNN, it is the 254th mass shooting this year in the United States. There is a mass shooting if there are four or more victims, not counting the shooter.
