The deposed South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been arrested again. He was placed in an isolation cell in a prison on Thursday. The former president is being prosecuted for abuse of power and leading an insurrection.
A special prosecutor requested an arrest warrant again on Wednesday, fearing that Yoon would destroy evidence. After a hearing of almost seven hours, the judge agreed.
Yoon caused a major political crisis in December by declaring a state of emergency. He wanted to thwart the opposition with it. They could block his plans with a parliamentary majority. Shortly thereafter, he was deposed.
Yoon resisted the first arrest warrant fiercely. After a days-long blockade of the presidential palace, he was arrested anyway. He was then detained for 52 days, after which he was released on technical grounds.
The progressive politician Lee Jae-myung won the presidential elections in June from Yoon’s party.
