Footballer Quincy Promes arrested in his home in Dubai

Footballer Quincy Promes has been arrested in Dubai. His lawyer confirms this after reports from De Telegraaf.

According to De Telegraaf, the 33-year-old footballer was arrested at his home. This reportedly happened shortly after midnight local time.

The newspaper reports, based on “insiders,” that Promes was arrested due to an extradition request from the Dutch judiciary.

The former Ajax player has been sentenced to a total of 7.5 years in prison in two criminal cases. He received one and a half years for stabbing his cousin and six years for involvement in drug smuggling. The court decided in both cases that Promes should be arrested immediately upon his return to the Netherlands.

On Tuesday, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal announced that Promes would not receive safe conduct upon arrival on Dutch soil. This happened after the footballer indicated that he wanted to testify in his criminal case, but only if he would not be arrested immediately.

The Public Prosecution Service announced on Tuesday that it wants to bring Promes to the Netherlands “as soon as possible.”
