Due to flooding in Southeast Australia, five people have died, and 50,000 people are trapped in their homes. The past few days have seen a record amount of rain in the state of New South Wales. The showers are decreasing, but the flood danger has not yet subsided.
Emergency services have accommodated almost seven hundred people in emergency shelters. More than a hundred schools are closed. In addition to the 50,000 trapped residents, more people are without power, reports ABC Australia.
The coast of New South Wales has been hit by flooding following a record amount of rain in recent days. Those showers are expected to decrease on Friday, but the flood danger has not yet subsided. On Friday, authorities issued new evacuation orders.
People trapped at home by the floods must wait until the water level drops. According to authorities, this could take days in the worst case. Boats and helicopters are distributing food and medication.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has traveled to the affected area. He called the situation “terrible” and warned that it remains dangerous.
Albanese has expressed his condolences to the relatives of the people who died and the other people affected. “We are here to say very clearly and explicitly: you are not alone,” the Prime Minister said to everyone who is trapped.
