Fire in empty building in the center of Bergen op Zoom, hotel next to it evacuated

In a vacant catering building on the Grote Markt in Bergen op Zoom, a large fire raged in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Guests of a nearby hotel had to leave their rooms. The fire is now under control.

The fire started around 2:00 AM in the roof of a monumental building that housed Pubby’s Sportsbar until a few months ago. The fire department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings in the historic city center, according to the safety region. Around 3:00 AM, the fire department had the fire under control.

Directly next to the catering building is an annex of Hotel de Draak. All rooms in the annex were fully booked. The guests had to leave their rooms.

They could not return when the fire was under control, due to inspection work by the fire department and possible smoke and soot damage. Some of the guests went home, while accommodation had to be arranged for others. In the meantime, they were accommodated in the main building of the hotel, which is located a little further down the Grote Markt.
