Sarina Wiegman, the national coach, became European champion with England for the third time in her career on Sunday. That is special, but not unique. The figures for the new success of the woman from The Hague.
With her three European titles, Wiegman equals record holder Tina Theune, who became European champion three times with Germany from 1997 to 2005. However, Wiegman is the only coach who has done so with two different countries. She was crowned European champion with the Netherlands in 2017.
That was Wiegman’s first final as national coach. After that, she also reached the final of the 2019 World Cup with the Netherlands (silver) and was in the finals of the 2022 European Championship (gold), the 2023 World Cup (silver) and thus the 2025 European Championship (gold) with England.
It had never happened before that a national coach reached five consecutive finals of a European Championship or World Cup. The Norwegian Even Pellerud was in a final five times in the eighties and nineties of the previous century, but he did not do so in five tournaments in a row.
Thanks to her three European titles in a row, Wiegman has also coached the most matches at a European Championship. The European Championship final in Basel was her seventeenth European Championship match, two more than the previous record holder Hope Powell. Wiegman missed one match at the 2022 European Championship due to a positive corona test.
More records may still be shining for Wiegman. The woman from The Hague still has a contract with the English football association until the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. One prize is still missing from her impressive record: the world title. The final of the past World Cup was lost against Spain (1-0).
