
Cyclist Fem van Empel makes her return after six months of absence. The three-time cyclocross world champion will ride the Grand Prix de Fourmies on Sunday, reports her team Visma-Lease A Bike. Then Van Empel will again focus on cyclocross.
In February, Van Empel conquered the world title in cyclocross in Liévin in France for the third time in a row. But in March she announced that she would temporarily take a step back in connection with her mental health.
“I didn’t really know who I was outside of the course,” Van Empel now admits. The 23-year-old Brabantse started working with a mental coach. That did her well, she acknowledges on the Visma site. “In the end I mainly found myself, and that is something I am very happy with.”
On Sunday, Van Empel will make her return in the Grand Prix de Fourmies, a road race in northern France. Then she shifts her attention to cyclocross.
“The most important thing is that I am really looking forward to it,” Van Empel looks ahead. “I just fly in and do where my heart is.”
Van Empel opts for cyclocross after GP de Fourmies
The race in Northern France is primarily intended to gain competition rhythm, with a view to the start of the cyclocross season. Because Van Empel, who also participated in the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France Femmes, prefers cyclocross for the time being.
“My motivation and pleasure on the road was less strong than in the cross. Once I had made the choice, it actually felt good right away,” she explains. “What I like is the constant variety. No competition is the same: everything changes continuously. That makes it challenging and beautiful.”
