Francesco Farioli is reflecting on his departure from Ajax in a lengthy Instagram post on Tuesday. The Italian coach thanks the Amsterdam supporters for their support during his eleven months with the club.
Farioli decided on Monday, after the last league match, to hand in his contract, which ran until mid-2027, due to a difference of opinion with the Ajax management.
“Dear Ajax fans, the last few days have been a rollercoaster of emotions. From faith, sadness, pride, expectation, confidence, excitement, and relief. We have had a great journey together, filled with very special moments,” Farioli wrote on Instagram a day later.
In the post, the Italian mentions the special moments he experienced with Ajax: from the series with 34 penalty kicks against Panathinaikos to the pain of FC Groningen’s late equalizer last Wednesday, which caused the Amsterdammers to lose the lead and ultimately see PSV win the title.
“At the start, I was told: ‘Ajax fans demand too much. They are used to winning. They will not accept your philosophy and working method’. Well, those people were wrong. Together we changed the narrative.”
Farioli felt a strong connection with the supporters. “What I have learned about you (the Ajax fans, ed.) has nothing to do with a result, the standings, or prizes. You Ajacieden are the real champions. You always stood behind the team.”
Farioli did not succeed in winning a prize with Ajax but is convinced that the Amsterdam club will soon be successful again. “Keep supporting the team. Keep learning, understanding, and being patient. Ajax will be great again.”
It is not yet known who will succeed Farioli as coach of the Amsterdammers. Old acquaintance Erik ten Hag is said to be one of the options. Go Ahead Eagles coach Paul Simonis is also mentioned.
