Evenepoel is class separate in time trial and conquers yellow sweater in Dauphiné

Remco Evenepoel seized the power on Wednesday afternoon in the Critérium du Dauphiné. The Belgian was a class of their own in the time trial to Saint-Péray. He has the yellow sweater and also ended in Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.

Visma-Lease A Bike-Rider Matteo Jorgenson set the tone. The number two of the previous edition dived half a minute under the time of Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ), who was in the HotSeat until that moment.

But Evenepoel was a lot faster than Jorgenson. The reigning world champion time trial, in turn, dived more than 37 seconds below the fastest time.

The most important competitors could not match the time of Evenepoel. Vingegaard was 21 seconds slower and became second, Pogacar even admitted 49 counts. Mathieu van der Poel was the best Dutchman of the day with sixth place, about a minute from Evenepoel.

Iván Romeo was therefore only allowed to enjoy driving in the yellow jersey for one day, after his Tuesday’s stage. The 21-year-old Spaniard was still 1.17 minutes in advance on Evenepoel, but could not hold that margin. He did finish in a deserving fifteenth place in the day results.

The differences in the top of the rankings are small. Evenepoel has four seconds ahead of the German Florian Lipowitz and nine on Romeo. This is followed by Van der Poel and Vingegaard, at fourteen and sixteen counts respectively. Pogacar has to make up for 38 seconds on the Belgian classification leader.

The Dauphiné lasts until Sunday. The center of gravity is at the weekend. On Saturday there is a heavy Alpine ride, including the Col de la Madeleine and the Col de la Croix de Fer.
