Remco Evenepoel is overjoyed with his third world title Time trial in a row. The cyclist was much faster in Rwanda than the competition and even passed Tadej Pogacar, who was praised by the Belgian.
Evenepoel clocked a better time after more than 40 kilometers than Jay Vine and his countryman Llan Van Wilder, who completed the stage. Evenepoel even caught up with Pogacar in the final kilometers. The Slovenian finished fourth in 2 minutes and 37 seconds from the world champion.
“I felt pretty good,” said Evenepoel in the flash interview after the race. “On the flat I immediately felt that my legs were running. I could keep speed without going over the limit. The first climb was quite heavy, but I immediately pushed through.”
The Belgian did not do much that Evenepoel competitor Pogacar passed. “On such a day it doesn’t matter who it is. I saw that I was approaching Pogacar. I knew I had to push, but at the end it was tough.”
Evenepoel matches his third world title in a row Tony Martin and Michael Rogers. “That list is impressive. It is an honor for me. Next year I want to go for a fourth title, because I want to be the first world champion with four titles in a row.”
Pogacar: ‘Passing action was difficult to swallow’
Pogacar wanted to brighten up its 27th birthday with the world title, but eventually even grabbed the medals. “I wanted to spoil myself today with a world title. Then I should try it again next week,” the Tour de France winner meant on the road game.
