Even after Black Saturday, European roads are full: 'But a step back'

It is the day after Black Saturday and the European roads to holiday destinations are busy again. There are long traffic jams, especially in Germany, France, Austria and Italy, according to the ANWB. “It’s like yesterday, but a step back.”

The delay on the French Route du soleil from Lyon to Orange is currently about one and a half hours. There is also a queue on the A9 towards Spain. Near Bordeaux, holidaymakers who want to go south via the A63 are facing a delay of more than an hour.

In total there are about 550 kilometers of traffic jams in France. “Yesterday it was more than double that. But that doesn’t alter the fact that it is simply busy. It is actually just like yesterday, but a step back,” says a spokesperson for the ANWB.

In Germany, it is busy on the A8 from Munich to Salzburg in Austria, among other places. There is also a lot of traffic on the road on the south side of Ulm. In Austria itself, the waiting time on the Fernpas from Füssen to Reutte is approximately three quarters of an hour. The greatest holiday crowds in Italy can be found on the A22 between Bolzano and Verona.

“You can compare the crowds with last week Sunday. It is really a typical Sunday in the summer holidays,” according to the ANWB spokesperson. There is also already a lot of returning holiday traffic on the road.

If you want to avoid the crowds, it is best not to travel at the weekend. “For example, go on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between rush hours. Then you will have more freight traffic, but it is a bit better on those through holiday routes.”
