The Emission of Greenhouse Gases Decreased by More than 3 percent in the Second Quarter of 2025 Compared to the Previous Year. This Follows Three Quarters in which Emissions Remained the Same or just uses. Shrinkage of the Industry Probable Plays a Role.
In The Industry, The Emission of Greenhouse Gases Decreased by No Less than 8 percent, According to Figures published by Statistics Agency CBS on Wednesday. The Sector Used Less Gas, Oil and Coal.
It is not Exactly Clear What Is Beind the Sharp Deccline, Says Researcher Vinodh Lalta of the CBS. But Earlier Figures do give an indication: they showed a significant contraction in Turnover and Production, Especialally in the Energy-Intensive Chemical and Refining sector. Sectors with a narrower climate Impact, Such as the food industry, are doing well.
Several Chemical Companies Have Closed Factories Recently Due to High Energy Costs and Strong Competition from Abroad. That seems to Explain at Least Part of the Emission Reduction. In recent Years, Shrinkage, the Main Reason That Industrial Emissions Decreased, Accordination to Earlier Figures was from the Dutch Emissions Authority.
More Export of Electricity
The relatively mild spring caused a Sharp decrease in Emissions from Heating Buildings and in Greenhouse Horticulture. Emissions from Road Transport Fell by 2 percent, But International Sea and Air Transport Continued to Grow. As a result, emissions from the entire transport sector Increased by 3 percent.
The Electricity Sector also Emitted More CO2, Mainly Due to Increased use of Coal. The Dutch Electricity Supply is Becoming Increasingly Sustainable, But At The Same Time We Are Exporting More and More Electricity. That has to do with the closure of nuclear and coal-fired power plants across the border.
Last year, Greenhouse Gas Emissions were 37 percent below the 1990 level. The Climate Act States That Emissions Must Be Reduced by 55 percent In 2030. Accordance to the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), The Current Government Policy is Insufficient To Achive That goal.
Next Week, The Pbl Will Come with a New Estimate, which for the first time will also include the recent plans of outgoing climate minister Sophie Hermans.
