Emma Heesters announced Friday evening that she is cured of cervical cancer. The 29-year-old singer held up a sign during her performance at Amsterdamse Zomer with the text: I am cured.
Heesters was diagnosed on October 2nd last year. She then underwent six chemotherapy sessions, 25 external radiation treatments, three internal radiation treatments and an operation to remove lymph nodes.
Although she received her last treatment in February, it was unclear for a long time how her recovery would proceed. In April she said: “I still don’t know if I’ll make it to my next birthday.”
The singer is slowly returning to the stage. She now performs twice a week again, but notices that her energy level is not what it used to be. “I feel the extreme fatigue that you may not see on stage.”
