Elon Musk announces new 'America Party' shortly after a fight with Trump

Elon Musk has just announced the formation of a new political party. In a message on his own X, Musk writes that the “America Party” was founded to give you back your freedom.

The 54-year-old billionaire had been toying with the idea for an ‘America Party’ for some time. On Friday, he posted a message on X containing a poll to ask the opinion of his followers. Just under two thirds of voters thought the establishment of a new party was a good idea.

“With a two-thirds majority, you indicate that you want a new party, and you will get it,” Musk wrote on X on Saturday evening (Dutch time). The United States is no longer a democracy, but a “one-party system,” he sneered at the Republican Party.

Musk joined Trump’s campaign last year in the run-up to the 2024 presidential elections. After his inauguration in January, Trump enlisted his confidant to clean up the American federal government. For this purpose, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was established.

But recently, cracks appeared in the ‘bromance’. Musk was not happy with Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, which was passed by the American parliament this week. The Tesla boss had previously been critical of plans to increase the budget deficit and recently criticized the phasing out of financial support for sustainable projects.

Last week, the tech billionaire therefore threatened to establish a new party if the Big Beautiful Bill did indeed pass through Congress. Musk now says he is putting his money where his mouth is.

Traditionally, the American political system has two major political parties: the Democrats and the Republicans. Independent candidates can participate in elections for a so-called ‘third party’, but in practice they often lack the political and financial support to make things difficult for the other parties.

Establishing a new party is easier said than done, CBS News reported on Friday. A new party must meet the election rules in all fifty states. Moreover, Musk would face significant legal resistance from the Democrats and Republicans if he founded a new party.

The American news channel writes that it is a time-consuming process to establish a new party. It would probably take years, which means it is questionable whether he would be able to participate in the next presidential elections at all.
