Ellen Degeneres has emigrated to the United Kingdom because of US President Donald Trump. The former talk show host and her wife Portia de Rossi decided after the results of the elections that they no longer wanted to live in the United States.
“The day before the elections we arrived in the United Kingdom and after the election results we woke up with many texts from our friends, full of crying emojis,” Degeneres said during a conversation with presenter Richard Bacon in a theater in Cheltenham. “When we heard that Trump had won the elections, we wanted to stay here.”
Degeneres lives with the Rossi in a country house in the Cotswolds, where the two have embraced life in the countryside. “It’s really beautiful,” said the 67-year-old Comédienne. “We are not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages, the towns and architecture: everything you see is charming. It is a simpler way of life.”
Degeneres also spoke about a possible return to the spotlights. Her talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022, after a number of (former) employees had said that there was an unhealthy working atmosphere behind the scenes. After the fuss and criticism in the media, the presenter stopped the program after nineteen seasons.
She said she was looking for “new creative challenges”. She doesn’t know exactly what she’s going to do yet. “I want to have fun, I want to do something,” she told Bacon. “I like my chickens, but I’m bored a bit.”
