Electric cars are still a poor child on the occasion market

In the first half of this year, less than 4 percent of the purchased used cars were fully electric. Hybrid models accounted for about 15 percent of used sales. This is according to figures from industry association BOVAG.

In total, 1,079,516 used cars were purchased in the first six months of this year. That is more than 4 percent more than in the same period last year.

“Used cars remain consistently popular. New cars are becoming increasingly expensive, which means that many people consciously opt for young used cars,” says Gerard ten Buuren, chairman of the Independent Car Companies department of BOVAG.

Almost 75 percent of the used cars sold run on gasoline. Hybrids follow in second place, while diesels take third place. The fully electric segment comes in fourth place.

Although this segment is not yet that large, it is growing. For example, 14 percent more used electric cars were sold than a year ago. There was also an increase then, although it was significantly larger at over 50 percent.

Tesla’s are popular among used car buyers

The BOVAG figures show that the Tesla Model 3 is by far the most popular electric model on the used car market. Of these, 5,915 were sold in the first half of the year. That is significantly more than number two Kia Niro, of which 1,428 units changed hands.

These figures are striking because Tesla has recently been struggling in the market for new cars. For example, sales almost halved in the first half of the year. Sales of Teslas are also declining sharply in other countries.
