Dutchman (63) killed by Val at mountain walk in Austria

A 63-year-old man from the Netherlands has died after falling from a steep mountain wall during a hike in Austria. Attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful, according to police in the state of Tyrol.

The man was hiking with his daughter and son-in-law near the village of Sankt Johann in Tirol, north of Kitzbühel. They had reached the summit of the Kitzbüheler Horn, at almost 2 kilometers altitude. After a break at the restaurant there, they began the descent back to the valley.

At about 1,600 meters altitude, things went wrong. The man fell along the mountain wall and came to rest after about 40 meters.

His son-in-law ran to him to resuscitate him. American hikers saw what happened and alerted the emergency services, but the doctors in a trauma helicopter could do nothing more for the Dutchman.

A police helicopter recovered the man’s body.
