A 28-year-old Dutch citizen from the province of Utrecht died in Ukraine in early June, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Wednesday. The ministry does not say how he died or why he was in Ukraine.
A military blogger from Russia says on Telegram that it was a Dutch volunteer from Nieuwland. He allegedly provided military training to Ukrainian citizens. A ministry spokesperson cannot confirm this.
The spokesperson said they are in contact with the family of the deceased Dutchman and are providing consular assistance as best as possible. According to him, the possibilities are “very limited” due to the war situation.
In recent years, three Dutch war volunteers have already been killed. In May last year, a Dutchman was killed in fighting in the eastern Donetsk region. He fought with the foreign legion of Ukraine. His death was confirmed by the ministry, but his identity was not disclosed.
In 2022, two Dutch war volunteers were killed. At that time, it concerned men aged 55 and 27. It is not known how many Dutch people are fighting with the Ukrainian army.
