Dutch rugbyer Fabian Holland makes debut in selection New Zealand

Fabian Holland (center in the photo) has been selected for the famous New Zealand rugby team. It is the first time a Dutchman has received an invitation to the ‘All Blacks’.

The 22-year-old Holland from Akersloot in North Holland may make his debut for New Zealand next month. The three-time world champion plays against France on July 5, 12 and 17.

Holland left for New Zealand at the age of sixteen. He played for his high school Christchurch Boys’ High and then became a professional with The Highlanders from Dunedin.

The 2.04 meter tall Holland was previously active for youth teams from New Zealand. A player may play for another country if he has been active in the country for at least five years.

Holland plays as ‘lock’, an important force in the scrum. This is a restart of play in which two groups of players push against each other in a forward-leaning position.

New Zealand is one of the most successful rugby countries of all time. Only South Africa (4) has become world champion more often. Prior to duels, New Zealand always does the haka, a traditional ceremonial dance of the Maori.
