Polish and Dutch combat aircraft were deployed early on Sunday morning to secure the airspace of NATO member Poland. They came into action after Russian air strikes on Ukraine, near the Polish border. Polish airspace would not have been violated.
The operation, in which the ground-based air defense and radar systems were also brought into the highest state of readiness, has been completed, reports the Polish armed forces on X.
Throughout Ukraine, the air alarm went off in early hours on Sunday due to Russian rocket and drone attacks. At attacks on the western city of LVIV, at least two people would have died, reports the local Governor Maksym Kozytskyi on Telegram. Two people were also injured.
According to the mayor Andriy Sadovyi, the city – which is about 70 kilometers from the Polish border – had a hard time. The air defense systems of LVIV would be heavily burdened in repelling a drone and then a rocket attack. Around 7.30 am parts of the city were without electricity and public transport was not yet driving. Sadovyi warned on Telegram that it was “dangerous to take to the streets”.
In the city of Zaporizhzhia, a dead person and nine were injured in an attack on Saturday evening, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov on Telegram. Apartments blocks and houses would have been damaged during the attack. More than 73,000 people in the southeastern region were without electricity.
Russia has not yet responded to the Saturday night attacks. Russia reported that it destroyed 32 Ukrainian drones in the night from Saturday to Sunday.
