Denzel Dumfries believes that Paris Saint-Germain is the deserved winner of the Champions League. The right-back was outclassed with Internazionale in the final in Munich (5-0) by the French champion on Saturday, who in his eyes was simply better.
“PSG deserves this, 100 percent,” Dumfries said to BeIN Sports after the crushing defeat. “We didn’t start as we can, we were sometimes too late. And they were superior.”
Within twenty minutes, Internazionale was already down 2-0 due to goals from Achraf Hakimi and Désiré Doué, and that was also the score at halftime.
“Halfway through, we tried to motivate each other in the locker room,” Dumfries continued. “We wanted better, but it didn’t work. And after the 3-0, you know it’s going to be difficult. In the end, it became a walk-over.”
The fact that the score became so large hurts Dumfries. 5-0 is also the biggest defeat ever of a club in a European final. “That is difficult to accept. It is a black day for Inter. I feel guilty towards the Inter fans and everyone who cares about Inter.”
‘We wanted revenge’
The final of Internazionale is in stark contrast to the earlier matches in the knockout phase. The Italian team of trainer Simone Inzaghi eliminated Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, but PSG was too strong.
“We have had a great campaign,” said Dumfries. “But on the last day, everything was different. Unfortunately, this is the second time it hasn’t worked.”
The 29-year-old Dumfries was referring to his earlier Champions League final with Inter, two years ago against Manchester City. Then it was exciting, but City won 1-0.
“We wanted revenge. For ourselves and for the fans. It wasn’t meant to be again. But I will always be proud to play for Inter.”
