Dozens of cows briefly escaped from meadow at night and helled Heerhugowaard

About sixty cows escaped from a meadow in Heerhugowaard on the night of Thursday to Friday. The animals ran through an electric fence and then walked further into the city. No one was injured in the incident.

Farmer Nel Borst was in bed when the cows escaped. “Suddenly I hear a cow bellowing. Usually something is wrong, or a calf is about to be born,” she tells NH Nieuws. “I walk outside and think: ‘Oh, this is not good.'”

It is not entirely clear how the cows got through the electric fence. “Maybe they got scared of something and ran through the wire. If one goes, they all go,” Borst says.

Security footage from the local supermarket shows the cows walking on the highway. A motorist who happened to pass by then blocked the road to ensure that the animals could not walk any further. The headlight of the car sustained minor damage. No one was injured.

With the help of the police and local residents, the cows were escorted back to the farm. “It was taken care of in fifteen minutes,” a police spokesperson told NU.nl. “The local residents were very enthusiastic.”
