Real Madrid heeft zondag ondanks een vroege rode kaart van Pachuca gewonnen op het WK voor clubs. ‘De Koninklijke’ versloeg de Mexicaanse club met 3-1. Eerder op de dag won Juventus ruim van het Marokkaanse Wydad AC (4-1).
Real Madrid kende woensdag al een valse start op het WK met een 1-1-gelijkspel tegen Al Hilal en ook tegen Pachuca ging het vrij moeizaam. Al in de openingsfase was Pachuca de betere ploeg en dat resulteerde in een vroege aftocht van Real-verdediger Raúl Asencio.
Asencio, die tegen Al Hilal al een penalty veroorzaakte, kreeg rood voor een overtreding op de doorgebroken Salomon Rondon. Daardoor moest Real al binnen tien minuten verder in ondertal.
Opvallend genoeg liep Real daarna via Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler en Federico Valverde uit naar een comfortabele 3-0-voorsprong, al was dat vooral ook te danken aan uitstekend keeperswerk van Thibaut Courtois. De Belg hoefde pas in de absolute slotfase één keer te capituleren.
Real Madrid speelt vrijdag de laatste groepswedstrijd tegen Red Bull Salzburg. Het is nog onduidelijk of Kylian Mbappé in dat duel een rol kan spelen. Hij moest eerder deze week kort naar het ziekenhuis vanwege acute buikgriep en kwam dit WK nog niet in actie.
Juventus wint met uitblinker Yildiz en invaller Koopmeiners
Bij Juventus-Wydad kwam Koopmeiners bij de start van de tweede helft in het veld, maar het was een van zijn ploeggenoten die de hoofdrol voor zich opeiste. Kenan Yildiz was verantwoordelijk voor de eerste drie goals van Juventus, al kreeg de Turk de van richting veranderde 1-0 niet op zijn naam.
Tussen de tweede en derde goal van Juventus had Thembinkosi Lorch voor de 2-1 gezorgd namens Wydad. Hij deed dat op aangeven van Nordin Amrabat, de oud-speler van onder meer Omniworld, VVV-Venlo en PSV.
Bij Wydad stond naast Amrabat ook Bart Meijers in de basis. Hij speelde in het verleden bij NAC Breda, Helmond Sport en Almere City. Meijers was met een gele kaart op zak al gewisseld op het moment dat Juventus-spits Dusan Vlahovic in de 94e minuut met een rake penalty voor het slotakkoord zorgde.
De wedstrijd werd ontsierd door wangedrag van fans van Wydad, die massaal vuurwerk afstaken. Er ontstonden grote zwarte rookwolken in het Lincoln Financial Field, waardoor arbiter Hector Martínez zich genoodzaakt voelde om de wedstrijd tijdelijk te staken.

In addition to Amrabat, Bart Meijers was also in the starting line-up at Wydad. He previously played for NAC Breda, Helmond Sport and Almere City. Meijers had already been substituted with a yellow card when Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic provided the final chord in the 94th minute with a well-aimed penalty.
The match was marred by misconduct by Wydad fans, who set off fireworks en masse. Large black clouds of smoke arose in the Lincoln Financial Field, which forced referee Hector Martínez to temporarily stop the match.
