Denzel Washington is op het filmfestival van Cannes geëerd met een Gouden Palm voor zijn bijdrage aan de filmwereld. De zeventigjarige acteur kreeg de onderscheiding voor een “uitzonderlijke carrière”, zei de organisatie.
Washington was in Cannes voor de première van Highest 2 Lowest, waarin hij een van de hoofdrollen speelt. Hij verscheen samen met medespelers A$AP Rocky en Jeffrey Wright op de rode loper.
De Amerikaanse acteur heeft in zijn loopbaan twee Oscars gewonnen en is bekend van films als Flight, Training Day en Glory. In 2007 maakte hij zijn regiedebuut met The Great Debaters.
Eind vorig jaar vertelde Washington op de première van de film Gladiator 2, waarin hij een rol heeft, dat hij nog in een paar films wil spelen. Daarna wil hij met pensioen.
