Bondscoach Sarina Wiegman staat met titelverdediger Engeland zondag opnieuw in de finale van het EK voetbal voor vrouwen. Topfavoriet Spanje is in Bazel de tegenstander. Kunnen de Engelsen afrekenen met hun angstgegner?

De records vliegen Wiegman de laatste tijd om de oren. Een kleine greep: de Haagse is de eerste bondscoach ooit die met twee verschillende landen Europees kampioen werd én vijf keer in de finale van een EK of WK stond.
Als bondscoach van Oranje haalde ze de finale van het EK (2017, winst) en het WK (2019, verlies). Daarna herhaalde ze dit kunstje met Engeland. Sinds haar aanstelling in 2021 bij Engeland stond ze in twee EK-finales en een WK-finale.
Het kwam in de geschiedenis van het vrouwenvoetbal slechts één keer voor dat een bondscoach drie keer Europees kampioen werd (Tina Theune van 1997 tot 2005). Om dat te presteren, zal Wiegman een huzarenstukje moeten afleveren.
Spanje is de huizenhoge favoriet voor de Europese titel. De Spanjaarden zijn de regerend wereldkampioen en beschikken met Aitana Bonmatí en Alexia Putellas over de beste speelsters ter wereld. Op dit EK won Spanje ook nog eens alle wedstrijden, al gebeurde dat in de halve finales tegen Duitsland pas na verlenging.
Engeland heeft de laatste jaren geen beste balans tegen Spanje. De WK-finale ging twee jaar geleden met 1-0 verloren en vorige maand waren de Spanjaarden in de Nations League ook met 2-1 te sterk voor de Europees kampioen. Rekent Engeland in Bazel af met de demonen uit het verleden?

The records have been flying around Wiegman lately. A small selection: the coach from The Hague is the first national coach ever to become European champion with two different countries and has been in the final of a European Championship or World Cup five times.
As national coach of Orange, she reached the final of the European Championship (2017, win) and the World Cup (2019, loss). She then repeated this feat with England. Since her appointment in 2021 with England, she has been in two European Championship finals and a World Cup final.
It has only happened once in the history of women’s football that a national coach became European champion three times (Tina Theune from 1997 to 2005). To achieve that, Wiegman will have to deliver a feat of arms.
Spain is the overwhelming favorite for the European title. The Spaniards are the reigning world champions and have Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas as the best players in the world.
