Spain can reach the final of the European Women’s Football Championship for the first time on Wednesday. The world champion must then deal with bogey team and record champion Germany, who surprised in the quarter-finals against France.

So far, Spain has made the best impression at this European Championship. Coach Montserrat Tomé’s team was too strong for Portugal (5-0), Belgium (6-2), Italy (1-3) and host country Switzerland (2-0) in succession.

In Germany, Spain faces a tough opponent. The eight-time European champion did not make an indelible impression in the group stage. In addition to difficult victories over Poland (2-0) and Denmark (2-1), the team lost 4-1 to Sweden.
Germany made a name for itself in the quarter-final match against France. The team played with ten players for a long time after Kathrin Hendrich pulled her opponent’s hair. Yet Christian Wück’s team won after extra time and penalties (1-1).
Germany can also draw hope from the previous eight games against Spain. The German team is still undefeated against the world champion and has won three of the last four mutual duels. Germany won the battle for Olympic bronze last year (0-1).
