Cups fairy tale Bielefeld ends in the final against VFB Stuttgart, PSG closer to Treble

VfB Stuttgart ended Arminia Bielefeld’s cup fairy tale on Saturday. Coach Sebastian Hoeness’s team defeated the third-division side 4-2 in the DFB-Pokal final. In France, Paris Saint-Germain won the cup.

Stuttgart was already leading 3-0 after half an hour in Berlin. Nick Woltemade opened the scoring after fifteen minutes. Enzo Millot doubled the lead shortly after good preparatory work from Deniz Undav. Undav himself then made it 3-0 with a slider into the left corner.

Midway through the second half, Millot also scored the fourth goal by curling the ball into the left corner. Shortly afterwards, Ramon Hendriks came on for Stuttgart. Julian Kania and Josha Vagnoman (own goals) salvaged some pride for Bielefeld in the final stages.

VfB Stuttgart won the DFB-Pokal for the third time. ‘Die Schwaben’ also won the German cup tournament in 1954, 1958 and 1997.

Arminia Bielefeld caused a huge upset in the semi-finals by eliminating Bayer Leverkusen. Earlier, the club from the 3. Liga surprised Werder Bremen, SC Freiburg, Union Berlin and Hannover 96.

Reaching the cup final was the highlight in the history of Arminia Bielefeld. ‘Die Arminen’ had never been in the final of the DFB-Pokal in their 120-year history. The club’s honors list includes only regional championships and a number of titles at the second level.

Paris Saint-Germain has an impressive trophy cabinet and was able to add another cup to it on Saturday. The club won the French cup thanks to a 3-0 victory over Stade de Reims.

By halftime, the final score had already been reached, partly thanks to an excellent Bradley Barcola. He scored the opening goal and the 2-0. The attacker also assisted Achraf Hakimi’s 3-0 goal.

The Champions League trophy is still missing from the trophy cabinet in Paris, but that may change next week. Coach Luis Enrique’s team will then face Internazionale in the final. PSG had already won the national title in dominant fashion earlier this season.
