Coach Ehren felt a little more busy with golden hockey players: 'Win Win Dad'

Raoul Ehren is happy that with the Dutch hockey players he was able to live up to high expectations at the European Championship in Mönchengladbach. For the coach, who got a little extra pressure from the home front, it meant the first title with Orange.

While the players are still partying, Ehren already reports along the line for interviews. “Whether this is my most beautiful medal? I don’t know. I just came to the conclusion that I have the list complete. I already had silver and bronze, and now I also have gold.”

The 52-year-old Ehren was working on his first title tournament with the Netherlands this week, after he had previously been at the helm of Belgium. With that country he won European Championship bronze and two years later silver, after a defeat in the European Championship final against the Netherlands.

“I knew the pressure at the Netherlands was high,” says the coach after the 2-1 win over Germany. “With the Netherlands you have to win as a coach, and rightly so. We are the favorite, the number one in the world and have won the last four European Championships.”

“I am especially happy for the girls that they have it back in,” Ehren continues. “They worked hard for it and did it together. One of our goals was that they would get the feeling that they did it together. Hopefully everyone has that feeling.”

‘I am happy that I have not disappointed them’

The always analyzing Ehren believes that the final did not earn the beauty prize. “I can now mention a hundred points on this that we can still improve. But that doesn’t matter right now,” he says.

“You have to win finals, and in two years you have forgotten how we won it today,” continues Ehren. “And it was a real exciting final. Everyone wanted to see that, although I was one of the exceptions. I could have been less exciting.”

In the stands, Ehren received support from his partner and daughters during the final. He had already bought tickets for them in October. “Well win, Dad”, was the message that Ehren was told for the final.

“I’m glad I didn’t disappoint them,” he says. “Now it’s time for a small drink and we are also promised a hamburger. But I’m not going to make it crazy. Tonight I am back in my own bed again.”
