The cloud containing hazardous substances that was released on the premises of FrieslandCampina in Borculo on Friday evening has now evaporated. No hazardous substances have ended up on the ground.
This was reported by the North and East Gelderland Safety Region around 1:00 AM on Saturday morning.
Measurements at multiple locations show that the substances are no longer present anywhere. According to the safety region, the orange smoke cloud dissolved in the air by itself.
A spokesperson for the safety region said on Friday evening that the chemical reaction with various substances originated in a truck, which formed the orange smoke cloud. The substances that came into contact with each other are cleaning agents, such as hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, according to a spokesperson for FrieslandCampina.
As far as is known, no one was injured. FrieslandCampina reports that the factory has been evacuated and that all personnel have remained unharmed.
The fire department scaled up due to the size of the company and the possible amount of hazardous substances. In addition, an NL-Alert was sent out.
Mayor Joost van Oostrum of Berkelland, where Borculo is located, reported that the situation is “fully under control” and that the cause of the incident will be investigated “carefully.”
