Giulio Ciccone won the Clásica San Sebastián on Saturday. The Italian benefited in the final from a peculiar tactic by UAE Team Emirates.
Ciccone rode at the front with UAE rider Isaac del Toro 10 kilometers from the finish. On the last climb of the Basque classic, Jan Christen, a teammate of Del Toro, accelerated in the group behind.
Christen quickly joined the two leaders and then rode away on the climb. Ciccone was able to follow, while Del Toro had to let go.
With 8 kilometers to go, Ciccone also rode away from Christen. The Italian opened a gap and soloed to victory.
