Eleven children from Widar Vrijeschool elementary school in Groningen became “unwell” on Thursday after eating brownies that may have contained magic mushrooms. Eleven of them had to go to the hospital but have since returned home.
This was confirmed by school principal Joop Hakze in a conversation with NU.nl after reporting by RTV Noord. It concerns students from group 8 of the elementary school, who were on school camp together.
The children became “not so well” after eating, Hakze says. To be on the safe side, a doctor was called immediately. He came to examine the children. Eleven of them were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Nine of them were allowed to leave the hospital on Thursday. Two students were discharged on Friday. “They are feeling better now,” says Hakze.
“We were very shocked. Nobody wanted this,” Hakze tells RTV Noord. “It was a wonderful evening together. Then you get a huge shock, but now we have it under control again with each other.”
School assumes that there were magic mushrooms in the brownies
Research should show whether there were actually magic mushrooms in the brownies. The school assumes that this is the case.
Magic mushrooms are parts of fungi that contain the substance psilocybin or psilocin. That substance triggers a trip in people, causing them to experience reality in a different way.
