Francesco Acerbi has decided not to accept an invitation from national coach Luciano Spalletti for the Italian national team. The Internazionale defender says he lacks respect.
Acerbi was called up for the World Cup qualifying matches against Norway (Friday) and Moldova (next week Monday), but Spalletti announced on Sunday that the experienced defender had declined. “It’s not about an injury. He had doubts for some time,” said the national coach.
Acerbi explained his choice via social media. “After much deliberation, I have informed the national coach that I will not accept the call-up for the national team. It is a decision that I have not taken lightly, because it has always been an honor to play for the ‘Azzurri’.”
“But in light of recent events, the conditions to continue are not present,” Acerbi continues. “I am not looking for excuses or a favor, I just want respect. And if that is lacking from those who should lead the group, then I would rather step aside.”
“It is clear that I am not part of the national coach’s plans. This is not a final decision and has nothing to do with anger or the disappointment of losing a Champions League final. I feel it is simply necessary to take a step back.”
Azerbi was on the field on Saturday in the Champions League final in which Inter was outclassed by PSG. In the past, Acerbi has been the subject of discussion. He was accused of racism last year by Napoli defender Juan Jesus and had to leave the training camp of Italy.
