Car enters Tiel in Tiel and gets gas meter, residents evacuated

In Tiel, Gelderland, a driver crashed his car into a house in a residential block on Monday. He hit the gas meter, which meant other residents also had to leave their homes as a precaution. The fire brigade is checking whether the structure is still safe.

According to Omroep Gelderland, the car drove into a courtyard near the building at high speed at around 6.30 pm. It ended up against the facade of the house via a bicycle path and a playing field. Images show the front of the car partly inside the building.

It is not yet clear why the driver performed the manoeuvre. The safety region also has no further information about the driver’s condition, reports the ANP. However, an ambulance arrived to provide assistance.

Because the gas meter was hit in the collision, other residents of the block had to go outside as a precaution, reports the safety region. This concerns the residents of eleven homes. Network operator Liander was called in to shut off the main gas line. That has now happened.

Nevertheless, it may take several hours before residents are allowed back into their homes. The fire brigade will first ventilate the houses and also wants to check whether the construction of the building is still safe after the collision.
