Car drives in at the town hall of Hoogeveen and Vat Vlam

A man drove his car into the facade of the Hoogeveen town hall around 2:40 AM on Monday night. The car then caught fire.

The driver of the car was a 42-year-old man from the village of Elim. He was arrested shortly after the incident in the vicinity of Raadhuisplein.

The man is suspected of arson and destruction and is being held for questioning. A police spokesperson told NU.nl that the man did not need medical assistance. The fire department extinguished the fire.

A spokesperson for the municipality does not know if the man is known to the municipality. The police are investigating the cause and background of the incident. Witnesses and owners of camera footage are being called upon to report.

The door of the town hall was dislocated by the collision. A detour route has therefore been set up for visitors. “That’s all going well,” the spokesperson told the *ANP*. According to her, the service is not hindered by the incident.
