Canada abolishes counterlines on certain American goods

As of 1 September, Canada will scrap all import duties on American goods that fall under the current North American free trade treaty. These are charges that were introduced as retribution on the American taxes. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the news on Friday.

From next month there is no importing tax of 25 percent more for many American products. The condition is that the merchandise is shipped according to the provisions in USMCA, the trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada.

The announcement follows a day after a telephone conversation between Carney and US President Donald Trump. The countries will “intensify” the discussions about a broader trade agreement.

The White House welcomes Canada’s step and says it has long been delayed. Trump told reporters on Friday that he is happy with the move and that he wants to call Carney again soon. Canada was one of the few countries that quickly took retaliation measures against Trump’s import duties.
