Bosz is not waiting for the De Jong choice and appoints Schouten as PSV's captain

Jerdy Schouten is the new captain of PSV. The 28-year-old midfielder is the successor to Luuk de Jong, who still hasn’t made a decision about a longer stay in Eindhoven.

The contract of De Jong expired after last season. The 34-year-old club icon can sign a new contract in Eindhoven, but has not yet done so. De Jong is reportedly doubting his chances of playing time at PSV, now that Ricardo Pepi is the intended first striker for next season.

PSV started the preparation without De Jong and already played some practice matches, but coach Peter Bosz had not yet appointed a new captain. Before the practice match of Saturday against Athletic Club (at 5:30 PM) there is still clarity about the captaincy.

“I have been under contract here for two years now and I feel like a real PSV player in everything,” says Schouten on the PSV website. “I will wear the band with pride and do everything in my power to set the right example in all respects, both on and off the field.”

Schouten came over from the Italian Bologna in the summer of 2023 for around 12 million euros and immediately grew into a basic player at PSV. The midfielder from Hellevoetsluis has so far played 70 games in the PSV shirt.

It is unclear whether De Jong will still be eligible for the band if he decides to sign on after all. De Jong has been the captain of PSV since he returned to the club in 2022.
