The book The Salt Path by writer Raynor Winn has risen eleven places on the Dutch bestseller list this week, reports book umbrella organization CPNB. The author of the autobiographical book has been under fire since last week because her work allegedly contains untruths.
The book is now at number 25 on the Bestseller 60, the list of best-selling books that CPNB announces weekly.
The Salt Path from 2018 has sold more than two million copies worldwide. In the book, Winn describes how she and her husband Moth lost their home after a financial setback and then took a walking tour of over 1,000 kilometers along the southwest coast of England. The film adaptation of the book, The Salt Path, is currently playing in Dutch cinemas. The trailer can be seen below.
The book recently came under fire after an article in The Observer, which stated that parts of the story were not correct. For example, Winn and her husband were not really homeless, Winn would have gotten into financial trouble due to embezzlement by a former employer, and the seriousness of Moth’s illness was also questioned.
Winn previously responded with surprise to the accusations on her website. She emphasized that the book is correct and only describes the period of their journey and is not a complete life story. She also announced that she has received threats since the publication of the article and is considering legal action against The Observer.
The publisher of The Salt Path says it fully supports Winn and states that the book is factually correct.
