Bijtjesdag for Toppers on Wimbledon: Gauff and Zverev ready after the first round

It was a day of upsets on Tuesday at Wimbledon, with several top players being eliminated. Second-seeded Coco Gauff and world number three Alexander Zverev were knocked out in the first round.

On court 1, Gauff was no match for Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who is ranked 42nd in the world: 7-6 (3) and 6-1. Last month, the 21-year-old American was the best at Roland Garros.

However, Gauff’s early elimination is not entirely surprising. She has never advanced past the fourth round in London (2019, 2021, and 2024). She has reached at least the semi-finals in the other three Grand Slam tournaments.

Zverev also bowed out on the second day of the Wimbledon tournament. The German could not handle Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. After a marathon match of almost five hours, spread over two days, he lost in five sets: 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), and 6-4.

Zverev was in the final of the Stuttgart grass court tournament two weeks ago, but he has a poor relationship with Wimbledon. He has never advanced past the fourth round in London. So far, he has not won a Grand Slam title.

Wimbledon is also already over for Lorenzo Musetti. The world number seven could not handle Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili: 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, and 6-1. Last year, Musetti reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

Bublik also going home

Alexander Bublik also went home on Tuesday. The Kazakh won the grass court tournament in Halle, Germany, a week ago, but he now had to admit defeat against Spaniard Jaume Munar: 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), and 6-2.
