Baby change in Austria after 35 years resolved by DNA test

Almost 35 years ago, two babies were exchanged in an Austrian hospital after birth. Thanks to a DNA test, both women have found their biological parents, ORF writes.

The women were born in Graz in 1990. Both had the same birth weight and were born prematurely. They were first held in Couveuses and later placed in heated beds, after which they did not end up with their biological parents.

One of the women discovered years ago that she could not be the biological child of the couple who had raised her. During a blood donation it turned out that her blood type was not compatible with that of her parents. Despite extensive research in the hospital and a public call in 2016, the other family was not found.

A month ago the second woman found out during her pregnancy that her blood type did not match that of her parents. She brought this in connection with the baby exchange case and contacted the other woman. A DNA test then confirmed the change.

The hospital where the change took place has apologized and reports to be “relieved” that the case has been resolved. The family who first discovered that there was an exchange, received financial compensation for the error in 2018. The second family may also be compensated.
