The Athletics Union has found a new technical director in Chiel Warners. The former Meerkamper succeeds Vincent Kortbeek, whose union said goodbye six months ago.
Warners experienced his peak as a athlete at the 2004 Olympic Games. In Athens he finished fifth at the all -around camp. After his sporting career, he worked as a tax lawyer at various companies at home and abroad and was an adviser as an independent entrepreneur.
“With Chiel we get a lot of experience in the international top athletics, combined with seniority at a strategic level and a huge network in sport and the business community,” says Pieke de Zwart, Managing Director of the Athletics Union.
Warners speaks of “the right moment” to return to athletics. “There is a great basis for continuing to perform at a global level across the full breadth of the disciplines and to further develop Dutch local talent. It is a turn in my career that feels crazy enough to come home.”
After the departure of Kortbeek in April, the union had no technical director for six months. Head coach Laurent Meuwly temporarily took over many tasks, also during last month’s World Cup in Tokyo.
The Dutch athletes experienced their most successful World Cup in the Japanese capital ever, with gold twice, twice silver and twice bronze. On the last day of the World Cup, Meuwly emphasized that it will be difficult for Dutch athletics to remain so successful.
The Swiss finds it worrying that the bar is increasingly higher, but that the budgets and the space on Topsportcentrum Papendal do not grow. There is now also a challenge for Warners, who starts as a technical director on October 20.
