Artwork of banana stuck on wall again eaten by museum visitors

The artwork of a banana taped to a wall has been eaten again. The incident took place last Saturday in France, but has only now been announced by the museum.

There are a total of three copies of the artwork. This time, a museum visitor struck at Centre Pompidou-Metz, the French museum reports.

The Italian artist of the work, Maurizio Cattelan, responded that he is disappointed that the duct tape and peel were not also eaten. According to the museum, a new banana was hung after a few minutes. Because a banana will rot over time, the museum must regularly hang a new one.

The conceptual artwork called Comedian was first presented at the Art Basel Miami Beach art fair in 2019 and then yielded about $120,000 (€108,000) upon sale. Cattelan’s work was sold for $6.2 million (€5.3 million) at an auction in New York last year.

After the unveiling of the work, a discussion arose about whether Comedian can or cannot be considered a work of art. According to Cattelan, that was the goal.
