The municipality of Amsterdam wants to bring seriously ill and injured children from Gaza to the Netherlands for medical treatment in the Amsterdam UMC. The cabinet indicated that it did not want to organize medical evacuations to Dutch hospitals last month.
On Friday, the mayor and aldermen urgently invoke the government to participate in evacuating sick children. In a letter they write that Amsterdam sees the reception of victims from Gaza as “humanitarian obligation” and “likes to cooperate”.
The Amsterdam UMC thinks it is “necessary” to record the victims, says Mayor Femke Halsema after asking from the Amsterdam city council. The hospital emphasizes “the lack of medical care in Gaza”.
The cabinet indicated last month that it did not want to organize medical evacuations to Dutch hospitals. Instead, it would rather offer help with care in “the region”, which means the Middle East here. In the meantime, countries such as Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Italy are taking care of Palestinian children for medical care.
“We are very concerned that the motion for treating children from Gaza with the highest medical needs in Dutch hospitals has been rejected,” the Amsterdam UMC responded to this decision last week. “We think this is inhumane. If even innocent children with serious injuries or chronic diseases may not be helped in our country, where is our humanity?”
