Joshua Cheptegei

Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei will participate in the Amsterdam marathon on Sunday, October 19, the event’s organization announced on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Cheptegei set an Olympic record in the 10,000 meters in Paris last August with a time of 26:43.14. It was his first Olympic title at that distance.

In 2021, the Ugandan became Olympic champion in the 5,000 meters in Tokyo. This is Cheptegei’s third time participating in a marathon.

Tamirat Tola had previously been confirmed for the Amsterdam marathon. The Ethiopian is the reigning Olympic champion in the marathon and the course record holder in Amsterdam. Three years ago, he also became world marathon champion and won the New York marathon.

The Amsterdam marathon is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. Last year, the Ethiopian Tsegaye Getachew won the race for the second time.
