Amnesty summarizes the municipality of Amsterdam for demonstration ban after Ajax-Maccabi

Amnesty International Nederland has SUED the Municipality of Amsterdam. The Human Rights Organization is Doing So Because of what it sees as an Unlawful Ban On Demonstrations in November Last Year. The Ban Applied to the Six Days After the Riots Surrounding the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv Soccer Match.

The Mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, Issued Two Emergency Ordinances on November 8, 2024, Resulting in A Ban On Demonstrations in The Capital. That Decision was made because of the disturbances surrounding the soccer match between ajax and maccabi tel aviv. The Decision was in effect Until November 14.

For the first three days, no one was allowed to demonstrate. In the three days after that, it was Possible if demonstrators applied for an exemption. Some Demonstrations Therefore Did Not Take Place in the City Center, But On The Westergasterrein.

Amnesty calls the ban an excessive restriction on the right to demonstrate. The Organization is Going to Court “because it must be clear that such a far-streaking ban can never be justified.” Accordance to amnesty, the ban was not proportionate and not necessary.

The Organization and Six Individual Co-Claimants Want the Court to Rule That The Municipality of Amsterdam Acted UNLAWFERLY. They want to prevent it from happening again in the future.

The Municipality of Amsterdam Says in a response to nu.nl that it has tasks note of the summons. “Amnesty is of course free to do so. We await the follow-up.”
