Kristian Hlynsson completed his transfer from Ajax to FC Twente on Tuesday. The Amsterdam club will reportedly receive around 2 million euros for the midfielder, who has signed a four-year contract in Enschede.
Hlynsson already played on loan at Sparta Rotterdam for the past six months. The Icelander had little prospect of playing time at Ajax. The player, along with six other players, was reportedly no longer welcome in the first team, to the surprise of players’ union VVCS.
“Kristian faced a lot of competition for his position at Ajax, which made it better for him to look further,” technical director Alex Kroes said on Ajax’s website. “It’s great for him that he was able to put himself in the spotlight in the past six months.”
The 21-year-old Hlynsson had one year left on his contract with Ajax. He joined from Icelandic club Breidablik in January 2020 and played a total of 45 matches for the Amsterdam first team, scoring ten times.
Hlynsson is looking forward to his time in Enschede. “FC Twente is a big club and has a great fanbase. I want to show myself here,” Hlynsson said on the FC Twente website. He will immediately join the training camp in Austria.
