Ajax also continues with routinier Klaassen (32): 'A real Ajax player'

Ajax is extending Davy Klaassen’s contract. The 32-year-old attacking midfielder has extended his expiring contract by two years.

Klaassen would become clubless on Tuesday if Ajax didn’t extend his contract, but that won’t happen. The Hilversum native returned to Amsterdam last year and contributed eight goals and two assists in 31 Eredivisie matches.

Ajax is again extending the contract of an experienced player. Technical director Alex Kroes recently extended the contract of 33-year-old Steven Berghuis by two years. The expiring contract of 41-year-old Remko Pasveer is also expected to be extended.

“It is very good that we can keep Davy at the club longer,” says Kroes about the contract extension of Klaassen. “He is very fit, and with his enormous drive, he can lead the team when a little more is needed.”

“He has a nose for the goal and is a prime example of a true Ajax player with spirit. In short, with all his experience, he is a very important link within this selection. Also off the field.”

Klaassen working on third period at Ajax

Klaassen made his debut for Ajax in 2011. Six years later, he earned a transfer to Everton. After a period at Werder Bremen, he returned to Amsterdam in 2020, but three years later, he tried his luck at Internazionale.

After one year in Italy, another return to the old nest followed. In total, Klaassen played 356 matches for Ajax, in which he scored 101 times and provided 52 assists. He became national champion with the Amsterdammers five times.

With his contract extension, Klaassen simply continues the preparation with Ajax, which started on Sunday with the first training. The record champion is led by trainer John Heitinga, who succeeds the departed Francesco Farioli.

With Klaassen in the team, Ajax will participate in the Champions League next season for the first time since 2022. The club missed out on the national title last season after a dramatic ending but finished second. That was enough for participation in the Champions League.
