Thomas van den Belt leaves Feyenoord for FC Twente. The 23-year-old midfielder, who did not impress at De Kuip, has signed for four seasons in Enschede.
Feyenoord took over Van den Belt from PEC Zwolle two years ago. At PEC he had scored nineteen times in 79 games, which aroused the interest of the Rotterdam team.
His time at De Kuip was not a great success. He only played eleven games there. Van den Belt was loaned to CD Castellón last season. In Spain he played 39 games and scored six times.
“Last season I had a good season in Spain at Castellón and FC Twente recently contacted me. Then the choice is not difficult,” says Van den Belt. “FC Twente is a wonderful club and wanted to move quickly. That gave confidence.”
His father Gerald van den Belt was previously a director at FC Twente. “I know FC Twente well. In the time that my father worked here, I came here often,” says the midfielder. “A club with a beautiful stadium and very loyal supporters. All in all, this is a very nice step.”
Van den Belt is FC Twente’s first transfer of this summer. The club from Enschede lost Sem Steijn to Feyenoord and saw Michal Sadílek leave for Slavia Prague.
FC Twente finished sixth in the Eredivisie last season. AZ was too strong in the play-offs for European football.
