Screenwriter Gerard Soeteman died on Friday at the age of 88. Soeteman is one of the most influential screenwriters in Dutch film history and became known for his collaboration with director Paul Verhoeven.
Soeteman died after a short sickbed “in the presence of his loved ones,” his family reports to Anp news agency.
Verhoeven and Soeteman made several Dutch film classics together, such as Turkish Fruit (1973), Soldier van Oranje (1977), Spetters (1980) and Zwartboek (2006).
The screenwriter experienced his major breakthrough in 1969 with the television series Floris . Actor Rutger Hauer played a cold -blooded knight. Floris is still seen as a milestone in Dutch TV history. Soeteman already collaborated with Verhoeven for this production.
The most famous work by Soeteman – in addition to his films with Verhoeven – was the scenario for the attack (1986), the film editing of the book by Harry Mulisch. The drama got the Oscar for the best foreign film.
Soeteman received various prizes in his life. In 2017 he won the Golden Calf for the film culture for his major contribution to Dutch film history.
